Evaluation of Exposure of Humans to Vibration

BS6472 Guide to evaluation of human exposure to vibration in buildings. Blast-induced vibration

BS 6472-2 is primarily applicable to blasting associated with mineral extraction. The standard is useful in assessing other forms of vibration that are caused by blasting, including when explosives are utilized in civil engineering works and in demolition activity. BS.6472 requires that the estimated vibration dose value be determined separately for the 16-hour daytime and 8-hour night-time periods. In planning terms, PPG24 indicates that BS.6472 should be used to assess vibration.

This British Standard 6472 provides an overall guide to those who are exposed to building vibration with the frequency of 1 Hz up to 80 Hz. BS 6472 describes the application of vibration weighting curves, blast-induced vibration, and the current methods of assessing continuous, intermittent, and impulsive vibration. The process of Determining VDV from frequency-weighted vibration measurements is included within the standard. In addition, BS 6472 offers guidance on vibration conditions and the human response inside buildings to building vibration.

BS 6472 is used in relation to environmental vibration assessments most commonly with the vibration caused by railways.

Evaluation of Building Damage Caused by Vibration

BS 7385-2 Evaluation and measurement for vibration in buildings. Guide to damage levels from ground-borne vibration

British Standard BS 7385 gives guidance on the assessment of the possibility of vibration-induced damage to buildings due to a variety of sources and identifies the factors which influence the vibration response of buildings. BS 7385 is used in conjunction with BS 4866*.

The two standards give guidance on the measurement, evaluation, and assessment of vibration in buildings in the frequency range from 4 Hz to 250 Hz. The risk of vibration-induced damage is dependent on the magnitude, the frequency characteristics, and the overall duration of the vibration input, as well as the type of construction of the building.

DIN 4150-3 Vibrations in buildings – Part 3: Effects on structures

DIN 4150-3:1999 includes guidelines for residential buildings together with criteria for both commercial/ industrial buildings and high sensitivity structures. The guidelines provide for increased levels of vibration as the wave frequency increases, recognising that structures will generally have an increased response close to their natural frequency which will typically be in the low (1 to 10Hz) range. Conversely, the human body has increased sensitivity at increased frequency which tends to cap the level of vibration able to be tolerated for construction activities.

Short Term vibration is defined in Din 4150-3 as vibration that does not occur often enough to cause material fatigue, and whose development over time and duration is not suitable for producing a significant increase in vibration due to resonance. Guidelines are provided for assessing the effects of short-term and long-term vibration.
